It is high in lauric acid, which is converted into monolaurin by the body. Infants produce monolaurin from the lauric acid they receive in mothers milk. Monolaurin is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral. Lab tests on this oil from Tropical Traditions shows its lauric acid content to be between 50-57%. Independenttests run by the University of the Phillipines on different coconut oils produced in the country show Tropical Traditions coconut oil to be the highest in polyphenols. They believe this is due the manner in which the oil is extracted from the coconut meat. Polyphenols are among the goodies that make green tea a nutriceutical.

The health benefits from this great stuff are many. Skin conditions improve, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis have responded to coconut oil and it is reported to promote normal thyroid function. We have personally seen a dramatic reduction in autoimmune inflammatory response in one of our dogs using this oil. We have also seen coconut oil significantly improve the mobility of a dog with a severe neuro-muscular disorder. Coconut oil can be used topically to treat hot spots and other skin lesions.

Good quality coconut oil should be pure white, fragrant with a wonderful coconut flavor. Do not expect it to be sweet as there is no sugar in it. It is a solid below 76F and a clear liquid  above that.

Start your dog off with small amounts and increase to two tablespoons per day, depending on the size of your dog.
